"As a playwright, I strive to expose the injustices and inequalities of a world
that too often fails to probe the shadowy corners where the truth resides, hidden away from those who need it by those who fear it.”
–playwright Mayank Keshaviah
The play gives us insight into a Gujarati family whose patriarch, Dhiraj, manages a 7-Eleven and is desperately trying to succeed in America.

SHANGHAI LIL’S evokes the spirit of the cabaret musical of the 1940’s. A San Francisco Chinatown restaurant is transformed into a nightclub with “Flower Sisters” songs, jokes, and dances despite the looming specter of WWII and internment. Shanghai Lil’s reflects the history of Asian Americans in a time of war and hardship, joy and triumph.
