A ghost story for family audiences inspired by a Japanese folk
tale collected by Lafcadio Hearn called “The Dead Secret.”
This story of one mother’s aching love for her son, so strong
it allows her to reject death, inspired by Japanese haiku and
renga verse with the theatrical Kabuki and Noh traditions. Being
performed as part of NEWWORKS 09.

| ELSA OKON
RAEL (Playwright) has written several stage adaptations of classics
including MATEO AND THE GENIE, SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS and
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, all of which have been produced in New York
and continue to be produced in regional theaters around the country.
She has written special material for Walter Cronkite, Kaye Ballard;
Gilbert Price, Marsha Mason, Beatrice Straight, Georgio Tozzi and
a book commissioned and published by SUNY, Women in a Changing World.
Primarily a playwright, she was awarded first prize in the Atlanta
Theatre Guild Playwriting Competition, a New York State CAPS Grant
in Playwriting, among other playwriting awards and honors. She is
Founder and past president of The Coalition of Professional Women
in the Arts and Media.
RON NAKAHARA (Director) is Artistic Associate
with Pan Asian Repertory Theatre and has directed, and acted in
numerous plays for the company. Directing highlights at Pan Asian
Rep include: THE LEGACY CODES, FORBIDDEN CITY BLUES, ALOHA LAS
VEGAS, CARRY THE TIGER TO THE MOUNTAIN, PRIVATE LIVES, THE TEAHOUSE
OF THE AUGUST MOON, and most recent acted in SHOGUN MACBETH. He
has worked at various NYC theatres including The Second Stage
Theatre, NYSF/Public Theatre, LaMaMa, ETC., NAATCO, Ma-Yi Theatre,
and Ensemble Studio Theatre. |

* EMI F. JONES (O-Sono) has recently
appeared as Yojo III in SHOGUN MACBETH with Pan Asian Rep, and
is now thrilled to take on the title role of Osono in THE SECRET
OF OSONO. Her NYC credits include: A THOUSAND CRANES, ANTIGONE
with NAATCO and THE CHALK GARDEN with Jacqueline Brooks and Terese
Hayden. Emi’s film credits include: “Marcus’
Story” (Literary Agent), “Waffle Wagon” (Journalist),
“A Gun Play” (Aristocrat), and “Smoker”
(Mysterious Woman). |

* JOHN BARAY (Holy Man) was last
seen as Bad News Simpson in Pan Asian Rep’s production of
THE FAN TAN KING at the 2006 NYC Fringe Festival. Other Pan Asian
Rep roles: 1995 tour of CAMBODIA AGONISTES to Cairo and Johannesburg,
KWATZ! THE TIBETAN PROJECT, TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON and WILDERNESS.
He was also seen as the Old Man in a Tree and the American Admiral
in revival productions of Stephen Sondheim’s PACIFIC OVERTURES
at the York Theatre and at the Promenade Theatre. |

* NANCY ENG (Aunt 2) is a graduate
from the High School of Performing Arts with a B.F.A. from NYU’s
Tisch School of the Arts whose film, television and stage credits
include roles on “The Unusuals,” “Rosa’s
Shoes,” a pilot produced by the Mayor’s Office, “Fame,”
THE INCONSTANT INFECTION, a play that debuted at the 10th Annual
Fringe Festival and ORPHANS staged at the 13th Street Repertory
Theatre. This marks Nancy’s second collaboration with Pan
Asian Rep. |

CHRIS DOI (Shiro) Some previous
New York credits include BALANCING ACTS, Los Tres Gatos Productions;
STREET LIMBO BLUES, Cruel Theatre; LOW AND AWAY, Love Creek Productions;
THE BRIG, The Living Theatre. He has been in numerous theatrical
and radio productions in his native Honlulu. |

* YOKO HYUN (Yosuke) is a third
generation Korean Japanese, originally from Osaka, Japan. She
moved to New York almost fifteen years ago. Her recent credits
include Fleance and Tara Kaja in Pan Asian Rep’s 2008 production
of SHOGUN MACBETH and the Phoenix Players (Queens) production
of TEA, by Velina Hasu Houston. |

* GLENN KUBOTA (Gensuke) After a
long absence from the theatre his most recent credit is JAPANOIR
by Michael Feingold, directed by Richard Hamburger, as part of
The Ensemble Studio Theatre’s Marathon 2008. |

* KEONI SCOTT (Nagaraya, O-Sono’s
husband) has appeared in numerous productions with Pan Asian Rep,
including SHOGUN MACBETH, ALOHA, LAS VEGAS and THE TEAHOUSE OF
THE AUGUST MOON. Outside of New York, he has acted in M. BUTTERFLY
(Oregon Shakespeare Festival). An avid yoga practitioner, he also
enjoys a parallel career as a full-time yoga teacher here in NYC. |

* BEA SOONG (Aunt 3) first appeared
with the Pan Asian Repertory Theatre in the 1981 production of
Momoko Iko’s FLOWERS AND HOUSEHOLD GODS. Other Pan Asian
roles include Mom in MOM, DAD I’M LIVING WITH A WHITE GIRL,
Nancy Wing in YELLOW FEVER, and Cindy Takai in CHIP SHOT. She
has also worked with the Blue Heron Theatre, the Interborough
Repertory Theatre, East West Players and La Mama among others. |

* SHIGEKO SARA SUGA (Aunt 1) is a senior
artist member of the company and has worked with Pan Asian Rep since
1986. Recent stage credits include; SHOGUN MACBETH as Yojo I, DAPHNE
DOES DIM SUM as Daphne with Centenary Stage Company, DIONYSUS FILIUS
DEI as Cybele and MYTHOS OEDIPUS as Hera for Ellen Stewart’s
Great Jones Rep. & Umbria International, SOTOBA KOMACHI, TEATRO
FLAMENCO Y BUTOH at La MaMa and at Ex Convento de Santa Teresa de
La Antigua in Mexico City. |
